1. Too much use of ‘stock photography’. It’s a big turn off and is easily avoided with the low cost of high spec digital cameras. There’s no excuse for not taking picture of your work for use in your marketing

2. No personality. If you’re distributing your flyers door to door then inject some personality in them! Try to make a connection between you and the end user. A picture of you or your team, your premises or something relevant to your business will make a big difference.

3. No contact details (or hard to find). Don’t make it difficult for people to contact you, make your contact details visible and clear.

4. No ‘call to action’. A flyer or leaflet without a call to action is a wasted opportunity. Give them a clear reason why they should contact you.

5. It looks like every other flyer coming through their door. If your flyer doesn’t stand out or is just black text on a white background its likely to find its way to the bin. Simple things like using a vibrant coloured background or an eye catching picture will make all the difference.

6. Too many fonts used. Stick to just 2 or 3 fonts and don’t get tempted to using more. There’s certainly lots of choice, but over use of too many fonts and styles will make your flyer appear amateur and will lose credibility.

7. No trust. Another reason people will bin your marketing is if you haven’t built some trust with them. If you’re a member of trade bodies or have qualifications and accreditations such as Gas Safe then you MUST put these on your flyer to increase your credibility.

8. Too much text. Finding the right balance between text, images and white space can be tricky. Try not to think of white space (the padding between elements on the page) as wasted space. By providing pictures and text plenty of ‘breathing space’ you’ll make it easier for people to get the message of the flyer.

9. No offer or deal. This is a tricky one. Not EVERY flyer or leaflet should have a deal, but it can help with retention of the flyer and the response rate. This also ties in with tip 4 on having a strong call to action. By providing a deal on the flyer you give a reason for people to retain your flyer and use it, or even pass it on to someone else. You can also gauge response rates.
